Gangsta Sundays

We like to do things a little differently in our house, and occasionally we like to do things according to theme. Enter Gangsta Sundays. A now weekly tradition. In a nutshell, we watch appropriate films such as 8 Mile, Get Rich or Die Trying and Notorious, and listen to quality artists such as Tupac and Bone Thugs & Harmony. So as you can see, we really go all out here.

I thought I should take it one step further and cook according to theme also. But what do gangsters eat I wondered? Pretty sure it’s not tofu and kale. I’m not going to lie I did do a quick google search to see if anyone had happened to publish anything on the topic..it didn’t really  help,  but I did find another awesome blog called Thug Kitchen which is definitely worth checking out!

Then it came to me..fried chicken! Of course! How delicious and quintessentially American. But not really the best choice for the nutritionist or the vegetarian in me 😦

But don’t stress! We have a fairly decent substitute in the vegetarian world: Quorn Dippers. Now to be fair, I haven’t had chicken nuggets from Maccas for a while now, but I think these nuggets taste almost identical to them, so I thought I’d do a little product review!

Quorn is a little different from other vegetarian mock meat products on the market. It’s made of mycoprotein which is a type of fungus, as opposed to soy protein which I find can be a bit rubbery and spongey. The nuggets come in a 280g bag and you can find them in the freezer section at Woolies or Coles, you just put them into the oven and that’s it! They are a great source of protein with one serve (80g) containing 8.7g and also low in saturated fat with only 0.7g, aannnddd 2.9g of dietary fibre! (Note: I can easily eat the entire bag of these things so just a warning that there are technically 3.5 serves in the bag 😉 )

So just out of curiosity sake I thought I’d do a little comparison with the famous McNugget. I’ve even made a table, how smart am I?! Servings are based on about 6 nuggets. Interesting to note the sodium content is similar in each, I thought there would be a lot less in Quorn!

And there you have it. I hope I’ve inspired some of you to go try them because they really are tasty and a much better alternative to Maccas (nutrition wise and animal wise). At the very least, maybe you will go watch Notorious. That’s good too.
